Second Journey Itinerary

1 Change is thrust upon you.
2 You experience a crisis of feelings.
3 Having been stopped, you must take an outer journey.
4 Being alone for a time creates change: a reversal of values and goals.
5 Suddenly you feel alone. You've changed but the world hasn't.
6 A longer period of isolation and exploration follows.
7 You become at home with your new self and gain wisdom and power.

This list is published at the end of Joan Anderson's book, Second Journey. How appropriate that I chanced on this title this week. When I read the list I almost felt a jolt of electricity from the recognition. I've read her other titles; Year by the Sea and Unfinished Marriage and felt a kinship with both titles. But when I started reading Second Journey I almost threw it down in disgust. Anderson was bemoaning the busyness of her schedule with the success of her books and demands of her empty nest household. She seemed like a real whiner to me and I wasn't going to waste my time finishing it. But since that old rascal cut me loose and I have a surfeit of time on my hands, I did finish it and I found this list which gives me hope of finding a new equilibrium.
