Danisha

Danisha is a beautiful young lady who comes in to see me at work. We've had time to get acquainted since her mother spends 4-5 hours at a time on the computer. Danisha always makes a bee-line for my desk and asks for a computer for game playing. She's quite an intelligent and well mannered young lady, but I became concerned about her when I noticed that she was coming in during school hours. When I asked her if she was in school, she said she was in kindergarten and I immediately thought she must be in half day kindergarten. When she started coming in with more frequency and staying all day, I started asking her if she'd gone to school today. The answer is always the same, "No, my mother didn't sign me in." Her mother appears to be working on an online college degree, which is commendable, but not at the expense of her child's education.  I did a little online research and found that kindergarten isn't required in the state of Indiana, but this little gem was dropped in at the end of the article:

Another area of confusion concerns the terms mandatory and required as pertaining to kindergarten attendance.  Even though it is not mandatory that children attend kindergarten, once a child is enrolled in kindergarten, the child is required to adhere to all state statutes and local school board rules, including attendance guidelines.

Oh how sad because she sounds like she has the passion to learn. I hope it doesn't get squashed too early.
