I got a call from my eldest. He was broken down on the side of the road with a blown tire. They'd had so much rain the shoulder was too soft to safely use a jack. That was a moot point  since he couldn't get the spare out because his tailgate no longer opens. I told him to call a tow truck and start scouting for nearby tire stores . He told me he was OK and since he has a smart phone I figured he could handle it from there. Then he called me again, except that I couldn't really hear anything but muffled talking between several people and grunting noises. I called his name without any response a number of times and then hung up to dial him back. Before I could, he called me again. Three times he called me with just muffled noises in the background and I was starting to get very worried. Maybe someone stopped  and threatened him and he just wanted to open a phone line as a call for help. I finally got through to him on the 4th or 5th try and he asked if he had called me-ONLY THREE TIMES! Apparently he'd slipped his phone in his pocket without locking it, and the disembodied phone calls immediately put the worst case scenario on continuous loop in my brain. I'm glad to say my kid is pretty resourceful, he managed to remove the inside cover of the tailgate, get the spare out and with the help of a tow truck driver get the spare on and hours later finally call me safe from home. Whew! Scary! It's a very helpless feeling to have your child call you from 1,000 mi. away needing help.

I would have been horrified! Glad he's safe!

Yikes. Sure glad that had a happy ending. Funny how many 'pocket dials' we receive.

Why did he call? Not for direction, but to hear Mom's voice.
That's a good thing.

Kinda like running into a pole in a parking lot, or being sick - a comforting voice can fortify even the independent and strong willed.

Stoneman56, are you poking me with a pointy stick? I haven't run into any poles this year, thank goodness.
