Well, I'm up to my third swarm captured and nuc-ed and sold. I am officially in the black with what up to now has been a fairly expensive hobby with little payback. I opened the Langstroth hive to install thyme oil for mite control and found the honey super full and HEAVY. That's the honey super above two super deeps, so the honey super I just added is all mine. I should have a good harvest from that hive. I still haven't figured out which hive cast off the swarms, or maybe they both did. I'm just grateful they settled in an easily accessible spot. And once they pick a spot the next swarm will alight in the same place following the previous swarms pheromones. One of my friends offered her husband as a swarm retriever, suggesting he would take care of the problem. Nope! this month the swarms are very valuable, going for $150 each. I had help with the first one, but the second two I captured on my own and immediately sold. No freebie swarms coming out of my hives, I'm overjoyed at finally being in the black.
A swarm in May is worth a load of hay,
A swarm in June is worth a silver spoon.
A swarm in July isn't worth a fly.
When you hold bees in your hands, it feels as though you're holding electricity.
