It's finite!

I just got off the phone with a woman who was instantaneously ballistic about a book that she said wasn't cleared from her account. I had a hard time squeezing a word in edgewise since she was already in full blown supersonic bitch mode. I asked her to hold, told her I would check the shelves and if I found it would cancel the fine and apologize. I found the book on the shelf, discovered it had already been checked in and the fine on her account was for late return. She didn't dispute the fact that she had returned it on the 16th, but said that she'd renewed it and had the receipt to prove it was due on the 17th. That didn't jive with the information on the computer and then she told me she'd renewed it over the phone and had the receipt to prove it. Guess what? There is no stinking receipt for telephone renewal, but she wore me down. I just couldn't take listening to her voice anymore. I told her in the future she would need to record the confirmation number from her telephone renewals and that if there was a problem with telephone renewal we needed to know about it so we could fix it. Translation, you got what you wanted this time, but don't try it again!

Meanwhile the homeschoolers were in for an art program and I had to break up the fun in the story pit between two boys having great fun dragging each other up and down the stairs by their clothes and screaming at the top of their lungs. Their mother was sitting closer to them than I was, but was so happy to escape her homeschooling isolation and visit with other adults, that she didn't even notice.

Next I had two patrons back to back who'd lost their library cards again, but didn't have the dollar required to replace them. Rather than just irritate them by sticking to the ineffectual policy I told them that from now on any lost card would require them to pay a dollar to replace. If the library would raise that to five dollars, we wouldn't be handing out replacement cards like a Pez dispenser. I have 4 years and 7 months until I can take early retirement. My new motto is, "It's finite!"

Hi Julie! I hope the weather improves soon, you are able to get your brakes fixed and you don't have any more of those calls at work! It was nice here in Alabama...did you know I moved? But it's been a long winter even by southern standards and I'm ready for spring! Last year I think I only rode the Katana 3 or 4 times so that was not good. With the new IRON I hope to get used to it quick so I can not waste any more time. I love your nature shots down the blog. Hope your days get warmer and the snow melts soon.
