He has not learned the lesson of life who does not every day surmount a fear. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

It's a good thing I opened the hives when I did. The Langstroth is steadily plugging along working to fill the second deep I put on a couple of weeks ago. They still have plenty of room to grow and don't need a honey super yet. The Top bar on the other hand had already reached capacity. I started out with a 10 bar bee bowl for installation. Since they were progressing so fast the last time I was in the hive I added another bar. Today I shifted the whole hive to keep the bowl centered in the hive (if the hive isn't completely filled by winter, the empty space on either end can be used for insulation). I added three bars today and really aggravated the bees by putting a paper towel infused with thyme oil between the bars. They don't care for thyme oil or foreign objects being so rudely thrust into their abode, and they let me know in no uncertain terms just how unhappy they were. I really gave the smoker a workout and fogged the area which seemed to settle them back down. I put the thyme oil in at the working end of the hive farthest away from the brood. I noticed an area of approx. 20- 30 drone cells, so they may have been preparing to swarm. The next to last bar was solid honey, but I won't be taking any honey this year. Next year I'll have to remember to put the thyme oil in earlier, so it doesn't affect the taste of the honey. I am enjoying beekeeping so much, but I don't think I'll wear a dress when I open the hive again. I didn't get stung, but it made me nervous to see so many bees flying around at hem level.
