J just pissed me off more than he ever has before, so much so that I just busted open all my knuckles on the punching bag that I usually reserve for bad boss therapy. J, who seldom if ever reads a newspaper was explaining why I was wrong about the opinion piece (that he hadn't read) re: Imagine Charter Schools. He said the reason I was wrong was that I'm uneducated. That's when the steam started coming out of my ears. When you're in a committed relationship, you're well aware of your partner's vulnerabilities or sore spots, and you don't intentionally poke those sore spots, especially in public. He and I have a philosophical disagreement about private schools in general, but the charter school situation is bizarre. I can see the need for private schools on the secondary level, but believe they detract from our societal well-being at the primary level by diverting funds to the private sector that are needed by the public schools for the basic education of our citizenry. IMHO it's a blatant form of racism/elitism. If parents want educational "choice" for their child, Great! Let them pay for it- out of their own pocket. Anything else just leads to further abandonment and deterioration of our public school system. I don't understand the logic of supporting for profit schools with taxpayers dollars. Why? All children deserve an equal chance at the beginning of their education. While I'm on my soapbox, if you need to lay blame for poor public school performance, don't lay it at the teachers' door. I have nothing but admiration for the people who go into the classroom everyday and manage to teach 30 noisy wigglers anything at all. Poverty, on the other hand is a great place to lay blame. It's difficult to support your child's educational career when you're a single parent working full-time just to keep the roof overhead, clothes on the back, and food in the belly.

The derecho just blew through our house, both outside and in. I've got to go see how the hives fared, my knuckles sure took a beating.
