I just witnessed the most bizarre interchange between the asst. and the grand poobah! I only wish I could have moved quickly enough to get my recorder out to make an audible record of the interchange.
He's mad, he's putting out resumes, he's done everything asked of him, worked split shifts, covered for her absences, and the one night he wants off, he can't find anyone to cover for him. I was on the other side of the cubical working on an online juv. book order. I almost had to hold my breath to keep from laughing out loud. Yeah, he's been asked to cover for her absences for the last year, yeah, it's been an imposition. But for crying tears! I covered for her for 18 years before I finally went to HR, told them there was a problem (her supervisor REALLY couldn't determine that from her attendance record?!), and offered a list of solutions. Yes, I agree the grand poobah's supervisor does little to nothing and the situation should have been addressed years ago. As a matter of fact, I distinctly remember pointing that out to the asst. on numerous occasions, and him telling me multiple times "There's nothing I can do about it." Now he's mad because he's stuck holding the bag! Well, I managed to do something and I feel pretty good that I stood up for myself, and I did it despite others telling me I should be grateful to have a job, and I wasn't in secure enough a position to rock the boat.
I have one more year, it's going to be a tough one, but I will make it. Maybe I'll even have a few more good laughs along the way.
