Well, it doesn't seem as though it's ever going to warm up again this summer. I've been trying to figure out how I'm going to get the bottom board on the top bar. There are still so many bees hanging on the bottom of the hive, too many to brush off. I don't really want to smoke them, so I guess I'll try putting it on at night, the chillier the better. The lower the temps. the less motivation they'll have to accost the intruder (that would be me). I have to remove at least 6 wing nuts and somehow encourage the stragglers to leave their favorite hang-out, get the board in place and the wing nuts tightened up before the sisters get cranky. I'll watch the weather, maybe I can make it happen tonight.

I have to admit, reading about the bees has me really intrigued.
So if you put the base board in place and it warms up, does that harm the bees?
Maybe I need to check out the local library and start researching this stuff. Any suggestions on books?
The bees are really great at regulating their nest temp. and they do like it warm, but when it gets too hot, they all hang out outdoors for awhile, or station a couple of fanners at the entrance-way to move more air through the hive. it's a moot point, I don't think there's any danger of me putting the bottom board on prematurely. With the current temps. there's probably three inches of bees hanging out on the underside of the hive. I'm not messing with them until more of them decide to move it inside so there's wire mesh in between me working and all 30-60,0000 of them.
